IMVU, founded in 2004, is a 3-D chat and gaming community with more than 50 million registered users and an annualized run rate of $40 million. Members create avatars to interact with other users by chatting, creating and playing games. Just to be clear, IMVU is not an acronym, and does not stand for anything, according to IMVU's co-founder, Eric Ries. They used experimentation and innovation processes to develop features that keep their customers coming back.
IMVU now boasts having the largest virtual goods catalog, where they have their own currency system based on "credits" and "promotional credits".
